I have been to the Big Island four times and Maui once, snorkeling is by far my favorite thing to do in Hawaii. There aren't really off-peak, there are always travel deals to Hawaii, so start looking now at potential dates and booking your hotel early, you can always cancel. Renting a car is a must for either island, so factor that in to your costs as well. Nice thing with Marriott is they don't deduct points right away so you can make multiple reservations and wait to pick a flight. The Grand Hyatt is also a great option and is 125k for 5 nights and you can use your UR to fill either. The Sheraton Kauai is right near some of the best beaches and you can do that for 140k for 5 nights. I wouldn't worry about finding a hotel that has a nice beach, there are beaches all over the island that will surely be better, find one with a nice pool. If you choose Kauai, there are a couple Marriotts on the island that offer pretty solid redemptions. I also think Kauai offers better hiking options since you have both the canyon and the Na'Pali coast. I had better experience doing a guided snorkeling trip in Kauai, and there were better options for DIY snorkeling off the beach. Maui is a little more commercialized so there are more options for hotels, but it's also busier and more expensive and lends itself to more families (kids). Both Maui and Kauai have their selling points. This will be my first major point splurge-thanks in advance for helping me make it count!ĥ nights on any given island is plenty so I wouldn't exceed that, and with Marriott you can get the 5th night free with points. Other: I realize it's impossible to avoid in Hawaii, but having fewer kids around is better.I'm also cool with driving off the resort every so often to grab a cheaper meal, but probably wouldn't go so far as trying to cook, so no kitchenette needed. Cost sensitivity: I'm OK with using a points + cash deal and paying resort fees, parking, etc.I'm not sure what exactly constitutes off-peak for Hawaii though. Dates: Off-peak travel seasons are best for us since we fly standby on airlines.Generally I would rather go to an island I haven't been to yet, but I'm open to Kona if that our best bet based on interests and points. Location: Open to anywhere in Hawaii except Oahu.Hiking is nice too and we would be interested in trying out surfing, but not nearly as big of a draw. I also happen to be Open Water certified, so I wouldn't mind sneaking in a good dive day. Interests: Snorkeling is far and away #1 for us.Side goal: I want him to see the power of churning on this trip so he can agree to be my Player 2! I'm thinking 4 or 5 nights at a nice hotel on the beach. I'm trying to figure out what are our best options as far as location, time of year, and hotel points value. I want to treat my SO to his first ever Hawaii vacation sometime in 2019.
